A ballot of the provincial master builders resulted in a decisive majority in favor of a national lock-out. DISASTROUS HURRICANE. i Received 24, 10.30 p.m. I Buda Pest, July 24. The hurricane killed seven and injured thirty-nine people. Several millions of francs damage was done. Not a single boat on the Danube escaped damage. THE PANAMA CANAL. Received 24, 10,30 p.m. Washington, July 24. The Secretary of the Garrison has formally announced that the Panama Canal will be open for vessels of thirty feet draught on August 15, but there will be no ceremonies until the official opening. New Zealand and Australia have jointly taken the title for the site of the Commonwealth Pavilion at the Panama Exhibition. -ENGINEERS' STRIKE SPREADING. Received 35, 12.50 a.m. London, July 24. The engineers' strike is spreading to other works.
STRIKE RIOTS. Received 24, 10.30 p.m. «■ Ottawa, July 24. 'Strike riots occurred at St. John's. Cavalrymen charged the mob of several thousand, striking them with the flat of their sabres. Many were seriously injured. Order has been restored. HEAT WAVE IN AMERICA. Received 24, 10.30 p.m. New York, July 24. An exceptional heat wave is spreading over the United States. Records were broken at Chicago, Oklahoma and Missouri, the temperature exceeding 100 degrees. Many people have been prostrated.
