NAVAL DEFENCE. ]!y Telegraph.--Press Association. Wellington. July 21. Naval defence occupied the attention of farmers at their conference to-day, opinion being divided as to whether New Zealand should establish a navy of its own or provide yearly contributions to the upkeep of the British Navy, Eventually the following motion, introduced by Mr. A. Ross (Auckland), was carried:—"That this conference, wink affirming that New Zealand should eontribute its fair share towards the defence of the Empire, is of opinion that the proposed change of policy in regard to the naval subsidy is such an all-impor-tant matter and fraught wit'll such ;-;evi-, ous and far-reaching results that the Dominion should not finally be committed until the matter has been more fully discussed, and that a irnal decision should he, left until after the Imperial Conference." The voting was twentysix votes for the motion and four against. TRUNK RAILWAYS FIRST. The Conference passed a resolution urging the (Jovernment to borrow sufficient, money to complete the trunk lines of the Dominion an soon as possible.
