THE MERGING QUESTION.
MR. M. HOPSOX'S ATTITUDE CRITICISED. During a discussion at the meeting of the Moa Road Board at Inglewood on Saturday regarding tile proposed., appointment of an overseer, the merger question was touched on by Mr. Capper, who said that as one of the committee he had favored the appointment of an overseer, but now that portion of the district was to be merged in the Taranaki County Council he questioned 'whether the balance of the district could afford to pay the £3 12s per week. In fact, he understood, by reading the News' report, that at a meeting of the Taranaki County Council Mr. Hopson advocated that the whole road district Bhould be merged. | Mr. Hopson indignantly denied this, I stating that he was deadly opposed to it all along. Mr. Capper read the News report, which showed that Mr. Hopson had said during the discussion at the Taranaki County Council, "We should have gone for the whole district." To which the chairman had replied, "I agree with you." Mr. Hopson stated that his remark was, "Why didn't you take in the whole district?" And it was really spoken sarcastically. , Continuing, Mr. Capper said that the merging of the proposed portion would make a difference. Mr. Hopson: It is not merged yet. The discussion then dropped. Later, the Board went into committee on the question of merging, but no report was given to the Press of any decision arrived at.
