CMFTON t. NORTH TARANAKI. WIN FOR THE CLUB. There was a good attendance at Waitara on Saturday to witness the game between Clifton and a team from the rest of the northern division, played in aid of the Tamu told. The ground, un fortunately, was greasy, making it difficult at times for the players to stand up, and thus spoiling to a great extena what would have been a rattling good game. Despite this, the play was intereating. Both teams were out to make it open, and some good bouts of passing were provided by both sides. The defence of both teams was, on the whole, sound. Forward, the teams wore evenly matched, but in the backs the combination of the locai team told and they thoroughly deterved their win of two converted tries to nil. The best Clifton team took the field, excepting, of course, Cain, but soon after the start Fisher, who was p'aying an erxatie game, had to give place to Jones. Aiuo-.r; the rest who played in "colors," Dive'and Stohr were absent, their places being filled bv Smith (Inglewood) and K. Woods. The "colors" were nearly over soon after the kick oh", as the result of good pay by McAllum, backed up by Dewar, and Carey. Clifton then took the upper hand, and Bertrand, who played a line game throughout, made a great run and, passing at the right time. Hicks scored, just 'as he was collared bv Young. Abbott goaied. Clifton attacked hotly until the "colors'" backs threw the ball about, and Woods was collared near his opponents' line. Abbott, Kupe, Taylor and Bertrand were prominent in some passing movements. but the visitors kept them out until a mis-kick by Morshead. and bungling bv the backs, let Uie Clifton forwards through and Birkett scored a try which Abbott converted. Young, on one side, and Bertrand on the other, made some lively sallies, which left play at midfidd. The "colors" now had the upper hand, and McAllum made a lone-handed dash that almost succeeded, but he was collared -by C. Tate. Young had two *|iots at goal, which just missed. Whittmgtfln then scored after a pretty piece of passing. Brown made a great opening, passing to Stewart, who handed on to Whittiugton, and the latter did the needful in great style. From the start of the second spell Clifton attacked, and Birkett nearly stored again, the ball being forced, "hittington was the means of the "colors" invading, and Brown essaved a dash on the blind side, but was collared by Abbott. C. Tate got away but w.M checked by Whittiugton. Snell, referee in tlie TukapaStar match at New Plymouth last week, reported that the Star team behaved in a disgraceful manner. Towards the end of the second spell a Star forward started to fig-lit a Tukapa player, but as several of the players got around lie did not get a very good view. It was evident that a Star back, a Maori, wanted to light and his Maori friends on th;: Star side were willing to assist. He ■warned the Maori and spoke to the Star team to the effect that if any further trouble arose all participants would be ordered off. He then re-started the game, but a little later the Maoris walked off the field, for exactly what reason he was unable to ascertain, and he accordingly stopped the game ten minutes before time with the score 15 to nil in Tukapa's favor. He considered that the Maori members of the Star team were guilty of disgraceful and unsportsmanlike conduct, and should be dealt with by the Union accordingly. It was resolved that the Maori members of the Star team be asked to attend a meeting of the Union, to he held at New Plymouth on the 23rd inst. GENERAL.
