The Stratford Borough Council'.- 1 resolution, passed at a meeting held on .July <!■ was before the County Council oil Wednesday. The resolution was, "That the County Council Ik- earnestly asked to defer taking any fun her .steps for the erection of a toil-gate at Waipuku until after the Counties Conference was held at Wellington.

Cr. Thomson said that the Borough Council was ipiite right in looking after the intere -ts of ils own ratepayers, but it. must not fnrget that the County Council had raised loan after loan for the up-keep of the roads, and was now paying inierc-t on the "shadow that was dead." The Council was keeping within the foil r corners of the Act in raising money for the maintenance of the roads, and the toll-gate was its only remaining flouree. Meanwhile. th> people in the borough were living in luxury, and should not object to the settlers, who kept the towns going, utilising the best means of providing themselves with good roads.
