UXI'ROTBUTED GRAVEL-FIT. j LOSS OF A HORSE. I At yesterday's meeting of the Stratford County Council, Mr. J. R. Corrigan attended in connection with an accident which had occurred on the Mountain road, whereby he bad lost a filly, valued at £3O, which, while being driven along the road, had fallen over an unprotcet- , ed metal pit (Wt deep and was killed. He stated that lie did not wish to take extreme steps without first endeavoring to have an amicable settlement. The filly had been sold to a Waikato buyer for I'3o. and that was the amount that • he was claiming. Whether the Council ! recognised 1 iis elaim ov not, he considei- ; ed that the pit was a death-trap, and j should he, fenced for future protection, j The matter was discussed by the Council, and various questions were asked, the Council ultimately declining to ae- | cept responsibility. Mr Corrigan then put in a formal ; claim for the amount, and the Council ; resolved to submit the matter to lM j solicitor for advice. j A MOTORING ACCIDENT. j STRATFORD RESIDENTS' NARROW j ESCAPE. 1 ! A narrow escape from what might j easily have been a serious if not fatal accident occurred 011 Tuesday night to • a Stratford resident and his wife, who were motoring home from Wanganui. When commencing the descent into the Manutahi Gorge the driver failed to note the sharp turn the road takes to the j right and kept straight 011, with the re- ■ suit that he went over the steep bank for a distances of some oO feet, landing within three feet of a large tree. Thanks mainly to a stout barbed-wire fence, the ear's downward progress was checKed in the nick of time, and it was prevented from overturning. lloth fclie occupants escaped without, any injury except a few scratches from the barbed-wire. The ear. a handsome little 10 h.p. Morris-Ox-ford. was quite new, having recently been landed from the boat and later used in AVanganui for d< nonstration purpose". As a result of the fa 1 ! it was badly da.ll- - one wheel being broken and tie l , axle and radiator badly damaged. For- , tunately for the motorists, two cars came along immediately after the accident, and some few minutes later a medical man passing by in a car also arrived on the scene. After a few min- 1 utes spent in salvaging a few personal j effects from the car, the unlucky couple were taken ori to Hawcra, An effort . was to be made to get the damaged car on to the road yesterday.—Patea Press. !
