Till': WELLINGTON lIKETINT
; If this week s weather is ;mv criterion 111:1 ttits promise to be the reverse of comiortable for those who attend the Wellington Kiieinir Club's winltT :i>cetwhich opens to-day and will he concluded 011 Saturday. " Yesterday's reports showed that considerable rain has •alien at Trentham, ami the racing track will be very heavy to-day. Acceptances | are larjrc, but only the mud-larks (".Ml hope to shine under these ail too win! rv ■ conditions. Hacimx over fenees is made I more risky, and. taking all in all, winj lers may be very hard to sort out. | The Wellington Steeplechase, run over three and a-quarter miles of modcratclv ■ easy country, has attracted a line lielil ol nineteen. Willi cracks like IVarv, 1 r I lie Spaniard. Liercola and Jacknnin in , the linal list, the race is almost ;if ] < : r;iiol National importance. The heavy I f;oiny; will not improve the chances of these top-weights, but the lot lower Idoun lire not : i>it, and tile best, | of the "tried'' divisioii must be hard to I Meat. I'ea ry has < it hot for a. cross country victory, and al- ; tIIOUO-ll bound to have a very foli lowing, Jitany good judges prefer tho j (diances of The Spaniard and liercola. I Taekman. on nis Wanjjanni Steeplechase | showing, will set <1 merry pace. The ' .Spaniard shows improving form, and | Pep-ola is reported to lie in jrreat nick. j The Ilawera horse, in company with Huffy and Captain dark, gave a good ;\\- . hibition of jumping on Saturday morning. The writer saw daekman and : K.votic ra*'e at Wanuanui, and at level I weights the former j. r ets my vote. Cap- ; tain Jack is a su'i* conveyance, but his paee doesn't amount to much. Ivothe may not see it out. but Huffy is sure to he running on over the last mile. Tim Doolan is ,<afe. but. like Captain .hwk. hi. pace U mil;- that of tlie hunter Of the i Silver Monarch and Kauroa read best, i While admitting that 011 a dry course |, IVarv would probably start favorite, the II writer is »f opinion that Jaokir.an. interested in the running of < Mi sid:t». Tf he jumps hi* pace might trouble the opposition, but "first-tinu'rs" are not
generally clangorous over sticks. This top-weight, Miirgo, is a no o ,l, honest sort, hut lacks the brilliancy of nags like [ innicnsitv ami Ruatangata. A big lield is sure to line up for the Stewards' Handicap. It is hardly likely that Milestone will be a runner In two races, though bis party landed a double at the Great Northern meeting over short courses. Mount Victoria is Rreiit in the mud. as is Kuniki. The latter won a double at Trentlinm last year, and is very fit again now. Silver Shield will *arry heaps of Canterburv money, and Oerberga will not lack Taranald admirers. Kaniki and Silver Shield may lie the favorites.
Th" Hack Steeple looks like providing a good race between The Chief, Ingenkender and Northern. The latter is jumping finely at present. Tin- winner is well concealed in the Te Aro Handicap. Of a large crowd, Try Fluke. Rigo Park and Oarance are fredv talked of. Oarance may be the public's first choice. Geo. Price's c'hnrgp wort a race in heavy going at the Feil 1ing Faster meeting, it will be remembered.
Several of those carded for the Trial Pint.—a race only open, to horses that h;i'" not won a race of (lie value of fiO sovs.—are not eligible to start. One of fhcie is Try Fluke, and thus a dangerous one is removed. Ornionil's shnki. and Need may lie strongly supported. Darby Paul. Kurnalpi and old Antarctic were railed south from Wanganui on Mondav morning. The former pair are V»rv well, but Antarctic's bad leg is still troubling him. He appears to have developed a ''bumble - ' foot, and those who have si.vt] him working sav he wiil not finish the course. Still. Mr.'W, Tuck is very sanguine.
Royal Arms, in company with Julian gave a' good exhibition over the schooling hurdles at Trentlinm on Saturday
morning.
Crown Pearl and Pari tutu may ho start«*.-! on Ssxtnrlav. Paritutu jumped several Inu fences on Saturday, the pace being 1 very slow. Goodwin Park lias .truse wromr. and there is said to be little hope of liini seeiTi'j," the post in the Orand National. 7 t will lie rememliered that he broke down on the eve of tin* Wellington winter nirrtinir last year. It is had luck for Mr. A. Alexander to [ tlie service of a fine hurdler just when tin* hii;; -fakes «jrow on every hush. Weights for the firaml National and for the Winter Cup are due on Friday.
