MUNICIPAL CONFERENCE.

The thirteenth biennial conference of the Municipal Association opened at the T<nvn Hall tivi> morning, Mr. J. P. .Luke (Mayor of Wellington) presiding over Btarly a bundled delegates. The Governor opened the conference. His Excellency heartily commended town-planning, though lhe pointed out the ditl'iculties arising from lhe iielile development of towns. The Governor also praised the general ideal of making towns beautiful throughout New Ze.i land, and referred to Arbor Day. saying that tree planting was highly desirable scenically and nceessitoush. Such work was one of his hobbies.

The delegates will be entertained at luncheon to-day by the Wellington City ('oiuicil, and to afternoon tea by the Governor at the Government House.

The Wellington Uaeing Club invited lhe delegates to attend the racing tomorrow.

At the Municipal Conference the following remits were carried:—That the district electors' list shall he made up on or before January 15, instead of February 15, as at present: that applications lor enrolment on the supplementary district electors' roll shall close on March 31, after which no claim is to he received; that, the councils be empowered In manufacture and sell bricks; dial the 'OovernmeiH be asked to consider (lie question of establishing State quarries and linking them with the main railway lines, so that local bodies will be enabled to get road metal at first cost; that legislation hi' introduced to prevent t'lic Government from erecting hoardings facing a public street within a city or borough, also empowering the local authority to refuse to permit the erection of private hoardings in ii. city or borough, that local authorities' powers be extended to enable them to subsidise private passenger or goods transport services.
