DRAINING NEW PLYMOUTH.

THE EASTERN PORTION. BOROUGH ENGINEER'S SCHEME. At the meeting c.f the New Plymouth Borough Council to-night th" Engineer (Mr. C. Skitroii). will, submit the following report: I beg to submit for consider;-, '..ion two separate, schemes for dealing with the drainage of the eastern portion of the town, including Ihe following streets: Devon street east. 02 connections: Courtenav street east, 42; Union street cast. 2!:' Gill street east, 8; Watson -tre-C 4: Ronald street, 7; Ivowhai street, «: Ka.iimu street, 4; Darnell street. IJ; total connections at present, ISO. The lirst scheme is by Shone ejector system, the second by Roturbo centrifugal cj-cior pumping plant. Shime Ejector Plant.—This phr.it would consist of a refuse destructor, electric mcior. air compressor and a duplicate Shone ejector. The ejector would be placed on Ebriugton Terrace, on the eastern side of the Te llenii bridge, the walls of the ejector chamber forming the abutment for widening the bridge at a future date. The destructor, compressor plant and electric, motor would be placer' on (hlniady Terrace^ at the eastern end of Lemon street. The heat generated by the .destructor would .supply [lower to' the compressor for a period of, saw twelve hours, or as long as the refuse" lasted. The electric motor would then automatically slip into gear and sirpply power until the destructor again took up the running. An air main would be laid from the destructor to the ejector. By this scheme the heat generated by the destructor would he used for power purposes. The estimated) cost of this scheme is as follows: —Destructor and building, £2,0(11); air compressor. £250: electric, motor, £175: Shone 'ejector,' £!K)0; ejector pit and screening chamber, ,£.'100; air mains, ,i::!IHI; rising mains, £000; total. £1525. The Pumping Plant—This consists of the .following:—Two 5-inc'h Roturbo centrifugal pumps and motors, £S7S; receiving tank and motor house, £425: rising mains, £«(>»: total. £10(10. In order to deal with the drainage of this area another septic tank will have to be erected on the western side of the present tank. The cost of this work will he £I2OO. which will have to be added on to either scheme. The cost of laving the main sewers and connections' on both sides on the footpaths is as follows:—Devon street, £1400;

I'ourte-ia, street, C3SD; Lemon street, £-17.">; Watson street wesi CiO: (oil street (both), £.")<); Kowhai street, east Dili; Karamu street (both) €75: Uonahl street east tliO; Darnell street west £1111',; manholes, £:l(il>; total, .CIOTO. These estimates are for laying t'.ie sewcr< on the footpath, the connections to (lie street boundary being made with two pines. liv laying tlie sewer in the ■middle' of tV-' street a saving of £7OO eould lie ell'ecteil in the cost ol laying the sewers, but then a charge of £3 would be added for every connection, which would amui'lit to Kt>7 on the pri in. number of connections and with: new connections likely to be required ■" the near future tlie single sewer would -ooi! lie more detrimental to the street surface, which is coiitinnallv being cut „,, for connections where, tlie sewer is i„ lh«. middle of the street. The total cost of th;- lii'.st system, which includes a refuse destructor, would be ,CS7:t>. The cost of the secom'l Would be .Ct'illO. Both systems an-capable of dealing wita ;V,lll connections iiiulcr fair treatment. The ejector system, which is the nn■■'t expensive to instal. is cheaper in power supplv, as the power generated !■;■ Ine destructor would not be any extra co.-t l„ your Council. However, if t.ie iw:u .-cnerateil be the destructor could bused for warming salt-water h.ilh-. 1 would not like to see the destructor power wasted. The pumping Pjant works automatically, anil requires vi<itimv 0,,1 v once a week. The cost ~i electric'power would be approximately f-lli per annum: that rei|iiiri-d for the motor in connection with the di-structo--in the ejector system would cost a'ooul £•2 O. in this scheme 1 purpose ventihitin'"' Hie main sewers in place of the bouse connections. 'fliis will be a savin" of approximately £2 10s for each connection, and will prevent a considerable number of blocks in private drams caused liv the Buclian traps. Rv resolution of Works Committee consideration of this report _ has been deferred until next .meeting or xlie committee.
