A. & P. ASSOCIATION.
A meeting of the executive committee of the Stratford A. and P. Association was iheld on Friday evening, Mr. E. Jackson (president) being in the chair. The resignations of Messrs Wunaeli and Hopkins were accepted. CARNIVAL QUEEN CONTEST. The chairman stated that the next I business was the nomination of a country candidate for the Carnival Queen contest in accordance with a resolution passed at the previous meeting. He explained -that so far the names of only two ladies hud been mentioned, and that one of these had been withdrawn, while the other hardly fulfilled the definition of a "country" girl. Tn order that the committee might know the exact position in which they would be placed in this matter, a member of the Carnival Committee, Mr. Stanley, had arranged to wait on the committee, and would give all the information he could. j Mr. Stanley was then called in, and explained that any nomination of a country candidate must be in favor of a lady who resided outside the borough. He also stated, in reply to questions, that if the A. and P. Society nominated a candidate they would be expected to do their best for that candidate by means of entertainments, sale of tickets, etc. It was proposed that there should be two country it wasihoped that the Whangamomona County Council would nominate one of these. Mr. Stanley then withdrew.
The question of nominating a candidate was then fully discussed, and the difficulties in the way of obtaining a suitable candidate, also as to the members of the committee finding time to support and further the candidature were the subject of considerable debate, it being evident that to carry out the business properly would involve an enormous amount of time and trouble, at a time when the business of the Association in connection with the approaching show would he quite as much to attend to as the members of the. committee could manage. At the same time a desire was expressed to do .'is much as possible to assist the. Carnival Committee, but that it was a question of the members being able to find time to support a candidate. Eventually, on the suggestion of the president, it was divided to appoint a sub-committee, consisting of Messrs K. Jackson. J>. Malone, W. H. H. Young and J. D. Healy to wait upon the Carnival Committee and explain the difficulty of the Association in nominating a candidate, and report to the committee on Tuesday. THE POULTRY QUESTION 1 . The chairman brought up the question of the Association taking over the Poultry Society's Show, and he expressed the opinion tbat no harm would lie done in acceding to the proposal. Mr. Malone agreed to making poultry exhibits as part of the Association's s3iow, but he was averse to taking over the Society. Mr. Healy contended that the Society must submit their proposals in writing, so as to have the position properly defined. On the motion of Mr. T>va!:e. it was decided that the matter be held over, and that the president and the mover interview the Society on the matter. SUCCESS OF SECRETARY'S CAXVASS The chairman reported that lie had received a most satisfactory report from the secretary, who was meeting with great success in his canvass of the district. He had secured a large number of new members and promises of exhibits, and much enthusiasm was evinced over the Association's Show, which was regarded as a great hem-fit to Taranaki. The committee then proceeded to re vise the schedule.
