At the reception of the New Zealand footballers, the speakers, who included Mr. Wade, supported the claims of the amateur game. Mr. Isaacs, in replying, gave the assurance that the .New Zealandcrs were truly amateurs. The visitors immediately afterwards started practice. NORTH TARANAKI CONTESTS. YESTERDAY'S GAMES. The weather yesterday was not ii i favor of football, and several matches did not eventuate. FIRST JUNIORS. STAR y. STRATFORD. The Star team forfeited to Stratford. TUKAPA v. IXGLEWOOD. Inglewood forfeited to Tukapa. NEW PLYMOUTH U.S. v. CLIFTON. The High School boys asked for a postponement of this match and did not travel, but it is understood that Clifton will claim the match on forfeit. SECOND JUJDRS. CLIFTON 17 v. STRATFORD D.H.S. 0. The above teams met at Victoria Park, Stratford, on a ground that was little better than a quagmire, so that good play was quite, out of the question. The visitors were a muo'h heavier team than their opponents, and contained several men who showed a good turn of speed. In attack they were persistent, and nothing but the good work of the school buck division in the first spell prevented Clifton scoring. The two teams were unequally matched, and it • is no disgrace to the school lads to 'have suffered defeat under such unfavorable circumstances. In the second spell the visitors set to work to score, J. Downes notching the first try. which McKoy converted. Soon after, as the result of . some passing and good foot work, McKoy scored, his attempt to convert failing. From a scramble near the goalline. .Tack -Tones got over. The attempt at goal failed. This was followed by Chapman securing a try, wWeh was unconverted. Directly after, Tate secured and scored easily, the attempt . to add the major points failing. ; STAR v.
