The report of the enquiry into the SuTveyor-General's Department was presented to the Assembly, It stated that disloyalty was rampant in the depa.iment. A flagrant breach of regulations enabled a coterie of officials to deriv-' pecuniary benefit in addition to their salaries, thug securing advances denied to officials who did not perform private work. On the recommendation of ihe Public Service Board ttie salaries of ii -e officers were reduced for certain periods.
NEW SOUTH WALES HOUSE. ABOLITION OF THE DEATH PENALTY. Sydney, July 8. A clause in the Governor's Speech I:elared that the Crimes Act would be amended to put an end once and for ail to the death penalty even for capital offences. . The Council adopted the Address-m-Reply. Mr. Wade secured an adjournment of the debate in the Assembly. It as understood that he will move an amendment against the Government to-day.
