' BIBLE IN SCHOOLS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Dannevirke, July (j. Two deputations waited on Mr. (!. Hunter, i1.1'., relative to the Bible in schools question, one from Daimevirke and District Ministers' Association, and the other representing tlie Catholic community, ill-. Hunter, in reply, made it clear that while opposed to Bible teaching in schools, lie would support the present Bill before Parliament, providing for a referendum.
FEDERATION OF LABOR. Wellington, July 7. The conference of unions, convened by the Federation of Labor for the purpose of further solidifying the forces of Labor and linking up with the recently-formed Federation of Labor in Australia, met this morning, 74 delegates being present. The -Hon. J, Rigg, Wellington, was iippointe'd chairman, Mr. D. J. Sullivan deputy-chairman, and Mr. .P. 1.1, Hickey secretary. The press was excluded and a press committee sot up to supply reports. Only formal business was transacted this morning. Resolutions were passed allowing Labor M.l'.'s to take part in the deliberations of the conference.
iSJIUUtiLKHS CAUGHT. Wellington, .July 7. Two of the Chinese crew of the steamer Northern, while smuggling opium ashore, were caught by Customs officials last night. To-day each was lined £25 or two months' imprisonment. The ,shipping company paid the fines in preference to entering into .CIOO bonds ;uvl having to send the offenders out of the country at the expiration of their sentence.
