THE FIRST SHIELD MATCH. AUCKLAND DEFEATS WAIKATO. By Tclrjiaph—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. The first shield match of the season was played here yesterday, Waik'ato (holder of i.i>c- Korden Cup) being the challenging association. The weather was .line, but the ground at Remucva was rough, end not suitable for good hockey. A la.-1 und exciting game, in which flashes of brilliant hookey were frequently seen, resulted in a win for Auckland by four jjo-.iis to two. The advantage was reduced ?hortly afterwards bv Hunter, who again scored for Waikato. The challengers': continued to attackhotly, but the defence of the local men was equal to (he occasion, and play was removed toy less dangerous territory. Just on time there was a wild seramh'e in Ihe circle, end the hall went into the net. The game then ended: Auckland 4, Waikato 2.
SATURDAY'S MATCHES. In a friendly, match on Saturday between Whakatiku A and Stratford, the Whakatika ladies were, victorious liv 5 goals to nil. Misses Johnson, St'uhr anil McEwen (3) scored.
Whakatika ]! were defeated bv High School B by 6 goals to 1. la a match between High School A and Ngatimaru at Tikoraugi. the home team won by 3 goals to nil.
