Home Rule
DEBATED BY THE LORDS.
PROPOSED CONJiENTION OP IRISHMEN.
By Cable —Press Association—Copyright
Received 3, 11.10 p.m. London, July 3. In the House of Lords, Lord Londonderry asked if the Government were absolutely sincere. Was Mr. Asquith prepared to support Lord Crewe and tell Mr. Redmond that he will insist on amendments of a far-reaehing character being accepted? Unless the Commons were to consider the Lords' amendments the proceedings would be a farce. Lord Wimborne replied on behalf of the Government. He asked the Opposition not to put forward the maximum, but the minimum, which would satisfy Ulster.
Lord Dunraven urged the Government to drop both Bills and call a convention of Irishmen to decide the future of Ireland.
Lord Islington said Ulster must be allowed to come in in her own time and under her own conditions, but with armed Catholics facing armed Protestants exclusion alone would avert a conflict.
Lord Halsbury, considering it urgent and necessary to do something to avoid civil war, supported the second reading of the amending Bill. The debate was adjourned till Monday.
ARMING THE WOMEN.
DEVELOPMENTS IN ULSTER. London, July 2. To protect homes, Canon Scott has organised a corps of armed women at Brookfield, near Omagh. London papers them as armed with rifles. In the House of Commons, Mr. Birrell's attention was called to the fact that the Ulster volunteers were carrying arms in the streets. He replied that the present time Government action was unwise. Mr. Neil Primrose asked: "Does the Government give any signs of its existence in Ireland?" A conference of the Unionist Council will be held in Belfast on July 10 to discuss the establishment of a provisional government in the event of Home Rule becoming law.'
A PETITION FROM THE CHURCH IN AUSTRALIA.
