GENERAL PARAGRAPHS. The throe prizes in connection with the Stratford Carnival Queen contest are on view in Messrs "Mullen and Marshall's window and are attracting great attention. There is every prospect of a keen competition taking place, and the starting of the campaign is awaited with interest. Mr. Allan J. Hill, secretary of the A. and P. Association, intends starting on a thorough tour of the district on Monday in the interests of the Association. He expects that the trip will take from three to four weeks.
For failing to attend camp, John W. Chadwick was vesterdav lined le- the S.M. £5 and costs 7s,'the alternative being 28 days' military detention.
At the Magistrate's Court yesterday C. ]j. Malone was fined £,■> and costs 7s for driving a motor-car without lights, das. Stanford was fined €1 and costs 7s for allowing a horse to trespass in the railway station yards.
A bad case of crneltv to a horse was before the Magistrate vesterdav, Albert Bclk being the dofciulant. According to the evidence the horse was painfully lame on the near side fore leg. there being a large swelling on the lower part of the leg and the muscle of the shoulder had almost disappeared as the result of the animal having to throw its weight on to the other legs. Despite being in such a plight the horse was being made to trot while drawing a heavy cart. The Magistrate inflicted a line of £3 and costs £ 1 Ks, and ordered the horse to be destroyed. For being drunk while in charge of a horse and gig, Gerald K O'Carroll was yesterday fined £3 and costs 7s at the Magistrate's Court. Defendant and a companion had been indulging to excess and were driving towards Toko, the horse being uncontrolled except as to pace, which was a very hot one. Defendant was thrown out and the reins were dragging when a. constable happened with the above result. Considering the danger to the public by such behaviour, the punishment was on the lenient side.

There will be a full practice on Monday evening, when all the members should endeavor to be present.
I As usual with the clerk of the Court at Stratford (Mr. Reeve), the quarterly returns were all made up and available at the opening of the office on the Ist inst. During the period tliere were 35 sittings held, 12 by the Magistrate and 23 by Justices. The civil, cases heard by the Magistrate totalled fj9, and the criminal cases 99, two being females. The aggregate amount sued for was £1538, of which £822 was recovered. There were 21 applications in chambers, 20 orders made; 93 plaints were issued, 16 distress warrants, 19 judgment summonses, 4 judgment orders, and one warrant for commitment. The civil fees amounted to£B3, the criminal £lO, and fines £7l 12s Gd, including £lO 15s for breaches of bylaws. The only other item of revenue was a license fee of £lB.
