WANGANUI DEFENCE LEAGUE. Per Press Association. Wanganui, July 2. A meeting of the Wanganui branch of tho National Schools' Defence Lea gue passed a resolution that members ot the. National 'Schools' Defence League in Wanganui were convinced that in the interests of public and domestic order the pieseut system of secular education in State sdbooh "should be_ upheld. The resolution continued: "We hold it no business of the State to teach religion, believing that every individual in the community has rights * which should be held inviolate. We take the view tjli'nt tho sdhoolaraster should at all times be the master of the scliocj; it is his sphere. The minister's sphere is his church, -and he has nr. business in matters of tili'e school as a. State school. Nor lias the State any right to i.sk school teachers engaged under a secular system to teach religion. We view the action of the. Masscy Oovcriimoufc in giving way la tho agit-.'.tors lor the Bible in schools Hid the com; ui.-ion o!" teachers as a piece of political opportunism which deserves the condemnation of the reasonable people uf this Dominion and resolve to use all our power to oppose it."
