Lord Save and Sele made a personal statement in the House of Lords in reply to an attack on his honor by the judge in tlie canteen case. He said tli.it when lie gave up the adjutancy ol his regiment he had accepted nonest employment as travelling representative for the Maidstone brewery. The judge had remarked that if lie himself had belonged to such an illustrious family lie would rather starve than eiirn his living bv cadging for beer orders. Lord Saye and tide repudiated the mischievous idea that noble ancestry debarred a man from earning an honest living.
"A FOIL LIE!"

In the House of Lords, Lord Saye and Sele repudiated the idea that an illustrious ancestry should debar a man from earning an honest living, it. was a foul lie to say lie had tempted Wlntttker. He had merely asked one ollicer, who was a satislied customer of his firm, to use his inllucnee with another officer. The firm only paid Whitaker his out-of-pocket expenses.
Lord Crewe accepted this version, and stated that iie did not propose to take further action.
