"I have yo.ii- letter of April 17, which I have read with much pleasure. Your enclosure has caused some amazement, for I trust you already know that the statement that the University of California, has any thoughWof returning to the American game is entirely without foundation. The cable dispatch referred to the University of Southern California, They have returned to the American game because their neighbours (Pomona, Occidental, etc.) were the best and nearest competitors. I tnust the matter will le put right before the public of Australia and Now Zealand."

REFEREES AND UNION.

A THREATENED STRIKE.

x Wellington, Last Night. For a long time dissatisfaction has existed in the ranks of the local Rugby referees over their appointment to senior flxturcH by the appointment board. They have an association nearly a quarter of a- century old, which haa frequently claimed from the Union tihio power to select referees they think fit for senior fixtures. This the Union hail not been prepared to concede. The matter culminated this evening, when a deputation from the Referees' Association waited upon the Management Committee of the Wc'lirojtoii Rugby Union with reference to the question. The deputation asked tot the aelectioni of referees be entrusted to them, or, in the alternative, that the personnel of the board be altered by the ismoval of the Union's representative. The deputation practically gave the Union to understand that if the demands were not acceded to, Üben there would be a strike of referees and a dissolution of their association. After (hearing the deputation, the Union resolved not to accede to tflie requests.

A special meeting of tlic association is being convened to dispute the Union's attitude.

THE .ENGLISH LEAGUERS.

By Cable—Press Association—Copyright Received 2, 12.20 am. + Sydney, Jnj^-ff^ The English footballer »t" Bathuwfc defeated Western to 3. They completely outclassed tho Westerners.

BIG GATE RECEIPTS. Sydney, July l. It is estimated that the .gates at €lO English League matches toMlerl £IO,OOO, of which, .the Northern Union will receive . £O3OO on account of matches already played. ..

n.z. tour extended. new Itinerary. Apparently all the heartburning occasioned by the muddle into which the proposed Ait of the English Northern Union team to New Zealand had got, has really been in vain, or else the determined attitude taken up by the New Zealand League has had the desired efl'ecj;, for the secretary of the Dominion governing body has received a cable intimating that the. Englishmen are willing to extend the tour and give facilities for & match, to be played in the South Island and at Napier, on the date originally fixed for the Ilawke's Bav fixture.

According to the new arrangements, the visitors arrive in the Dominio.n on. July S, instead of the 12th, and thus the date with Canterbury, which had to be cancelled at the eleventh hour owing to the touring team's limited stay, will he played after all. The new itinerary, which mis fixed up at an emei'fmey meeting of the. committee of management at Auckland lately, is as follows: Wellington, July 11; Canterbury, July 15; Tlawke's Bay, July 18; Taranaki, July 23; Auckland, July 2o: Wanganui, July 30; New Zealand, at Auckland, August 1. It will he seen, according to the new arrangements, that the English team will arrive in Wellington instead of Auckland, and the itinerary they will pursue is precisely that suggested by the New Zealand body in the iirst instance, so that, after all, the more or less frantic efforts to compress a quart into a pint pot has been unnecessary, and the position is "as yon were."

The foMowin.* will represent Tukapi seniors against Stratford on Western. Bark on Saturday next; Thompson, Toeker, Stohr, Webster, iStnnncrrag, Brown, Oilolvrist. McAHum, Kaye,. Cargo. Perry, Paul, Movsheftd, Wa'.'d and Wiley. Emergency: (.Hrilliam.
