STRATFORD IMPROVEMENTS. MESSRS IfALLIWELL & THOMSON'S OFFICES.

Anyone passing down Fenton street cannot fail to be impressed with the imposing new building which has been erected for the legal firm of Messrs HalliH'oil and Thomson. The elevation is of a dignity belittling the use to which the building is put, while'its chief features are pleasing and artistic, the large cir-cular-headed windows enhancing the ef feet. The foundations are of concrete, while the front of the structure has the plinth, pilasters, cornices and string courses finished in stucco, the other walls being colored brick, tuckpointed white. Tlie frontage to the street is 28ft, and the depth 44ft. An imposing entrance leads to a vestibule. Oft by Sft. from whence is a corridor of sift, leading to the large room at the back of the building. There are three exceedingly well-lighted offices, 18ft bv 1.-H't. ISft by 12ft. and 24ft by 12ft; also a fireproof deed room fitted with a .lohn Tann lire-proof and burglar-proof door, a telephone room, and all necessary conveniences, while electric lighting is installed throughout the building, also electric radiators. The rooms are match-lined throughout above a varnished 4ft dado, the walls and ceilings being suitably painted. The building, which is called "Otago Chambers," was designed by Mr. J. I). Healy, the wellknown Stratford architect, and erect-.'d by Mr. X. d. King, the plumbing and electric lighting being entrusted to Messrs Smart Uros. and the painting and decorating to Messrs ISellriuger l!ros„ Ltd., and the work throughout is well worthy of the high reputation of these firms.' Without doubt, Messrs Halliwell and Thomson possess the best suite of offices in Stratford, and the building is ft credit to them and to the town.

The greatest sympathy is felt for the bereaved widow in her sudden affliction.
