Mr. Carmichael, New South \Vales Minister of Public Instruction, has arrived in London.
Sir Ernest Shackleton is starting for his Antarctic expedition in the first week of August. The Foxton Borough Council hns appointed Mr. Hamilton, of Wanganui, manager of the municipal gasworks. A Press Association message m:.t<'s that Mr. Baldwin, Mayor of the Lower Tiutt, will probably be Qoverninent candidate for the Hutt seat.
Among the new appointments of Justices of the Peace are Messrs W. Black (Awakino), C. Leech (Awakino), J, L. Sproull (Olnira) and 11. Street (Ohura). A Domain Board, consisting of Messrs C. O'Sullivan, W. Old, A. R. Alpe, C. K. Oxen ham, and C. 11. Barnitt, has b<!en appointed to control the Uruti DornUin of about eleven acres. I Mr. V. White, of the Dominion, Ind Mr. T. Lindsay Buick (Press Association), have been elected respectively chairman and vice-chairman cf the Parliamentary 'Press Gallery, Wellington', Mir and Mrs Newton King, Mish B. King and Messrs W. and E. King left lly the Rarawa last night en route to England. Their trip, which will last altfut four montlhs, will be via. Canada Bud the United States of America. 1 Mr J. Scanlon, manager of the hew branch of the Melbourne Clothing €<>., left last evening on a two months' visit to the Fiji Islands. Mr Scanlon hits interests in the Islands, and is conbining business with pleasure. Ms Scanlon accompanies him.
. The death occurred at Christchurch on Sunday of Captain .John Washington Walker. He was born in Yorksnire sixty years ago, and had always taken part in the volunteer movement. Death was due to caruiac syncope. Messrs Stratford and 0. A. Hurley left 'Hawera on Monday for Wellington. The Hawera Star understands that satisfactory progress has been made towards the formation of a small colony of dairymen to take up land in Chili. On the occasion of leaving Dunedm for New Plymouth, Mr. J. F. Arnold, who is to succeed Mr. W. Slaughter in charge of the Labor Department's local office, was presented with a silver rosebowl and an umbrella each for bimse'i and Mrs. Arnold by the members of tinMornington Methodist Church.
Tlie death is announced of Mr. Alfred Dauphin, aged sixty-seven, a well-known resident of Ractihi. lie was born at Lyons (France) in KS47, and served bis country in the Franco-Prussian war, and also with her garrisons abroad for many years. About thirty years ago lie settled in N'cw Zealand.
Among a number of military officers who bad the honor of dining with the King and Queen at Buckingham Palace recently was Brigadier-General It. 11. navies,' of the X.Z. Staff Corps, who is at present Oncral Ollieer Commanding the 15th Infantry Brigade. Mrs. Davics accompanied her husband.
