FIRES.
DISASTROUS OTAKI OUTBREAK. By Telegraph—Press Association. Otaki, Last Night. A disastrous fire destroyed the Town Hall, the old newspaper offices, a garage, the Bank of Australasia, St. George's chemist's shop, and the district nurse's quarters. The outbreak when first seen had a good hold. Nothing was saved from the hall, but most of the things from the other places were saved. The Central Hotel was saved with difficulty. The fire broke out in the Town Hall. The Horticultural Society lost all its belongings, while the Otaki Maori Brass Band lost several instruments and £3O worth of music. The bank safes were later opened, and the contents found intact, but scorched. Richard Bevan is a big loser, his moving picture plant being destroyed. The origin of the fire is a mystery.
