THE AUSTRALIAN NAVY.
A MODIFIED PROGRAMME. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright Melbourne, June 26. In the Senate, Mr. Millen outlined the modified naval programme. In place of three submarines and six destroyers at first proposed he intended to build two light cruisers of the Brisbane class and two improved submarines. The reason for the change was that it was not improbable that the present type of destroyer might disappear altogether, being replaced by an immersible torpedo boat, and that cruisers were of more ■aval value than torpedo boats. The cost of the modified programme would be £IJOO.OUO, spread over five years.
