MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

(Before Mr. Kenrlck, S.M.)

DAUGHTER'S CLAIM FOR WAGES.

The only defended case heard at the Magistrate's Court yesterday was that of Blanche Whis'haw (Mr. Lawrey) v. Susan Whishaw (Mr. Macalister), which was a claim for £l2 10s in respect of wages which plaintiff claimed from her mother, the amount being calculated at ■Ms per week, less sums received from time to time.

According to plaintiff's statement, she left a situation, where she was receiving los a week, in order to assist her mother, who keeps a boarding-house in New Plymouth, in the work of the house, and she alleged that the understanding was that sire was to receive ,10s a week.

The defence was that plaintiff was not asked to come home, but did so of her own accord on hearing that her sister was ill; that thero was no arrangement as to payment of any wages, but that both the daughters were treated alike, and given money as they required it, and that the relationship was not that of mistress and servant, but of mother and daughter. The sister gave evidence in support of the defence.

In giving his decision, his Worship stated £h*t the question was whether the whole of the circumstances showed there waa any intention to pay wages, or that the relationship was purely that as between mother and daughter. He came to the conclusion that plaintiff had all the privileges of a daughter, and that tfhere was no evidence of on arrangement to pay wages. It was for the plaintiff to prove her case, and she had failed to do so, therefore judgment must be for defendant. No costs were claimed.

FRIENDLY SOCIETIES' ASSOCIATION ANNUAL MEETING.

The annual meeting of the Taranaki Friendly Societies' Association was held in the Foresters' Hall, Stratford, on Thursday, the president (Bro. Spurdle) taking the chair. The president's address referred to the satisfactory progress of the Association during the year, and the prospect of further development. Two more lodges had joined, bringing the total up to 41, embracing a membership of 2500, wnile five years back it was only 500. Credit was given to the secretary (Bro. 'Frank Amoore) for the success achieved, and his services were highly eulogised. There had been heavy calls on the fund, ibut the increased subscription decided on at the last annual meeting had enabled a creditable balance to be shown. Reference was made to the tendency to raise the hospital rate outside the Taranaki districts; no discounts being- received, from outside Hospital Boards, and the opinion was expressed that it would be wise to cut out the Camtifidge Sanatorium, where the fees were twice as much as at Rotorua. The question of members being precluded from benefits until they had been in the Association from three to six months was also mentioned, and attention was drawn *to'the laxity of Lodge secretaries in not forwarding lists of flames to the Association's secretary.

The following (Officers were elected:— President, Bro. Brabant; vice-prcsideiii, Bro. Gilbert; secretary and treasure!, Bro. Amoore; auditor, Bro. Stannersr, Executive Council, Bros. Kivell, Spurdli;, Bently and Henderson.
