THE HAWERA GYMKHANA.
A VARIED PROGRAMME. • SUCUKSSFUL DAY'S SPORT. The second gyuikniwi run under the nuUpioes (if the Kgmont A. and P. Association at I'av.'era yesterday attracted a good attendance, umi no ttcmbt Uiir would have liccn-imiuch had uhe afternoon fullilCed the moniiiig oaiyury ami been linn, inHead of turning void, with chilling sllwvers. A line and varied programme was provided, including military, horns uiusk-al and novt'lij events, th« day'i amUßcnicait starting with a sheep dog trial and riding vili.' >i band contest. All hut the military events filled well, and in these the Waitara contingent were the main fac- I tor, annexing .most of the prizes. The cadets, who were such a feature of the last military gymkana at-Uawera, were conspicuous hy their almost entire absence, which is to 1)0 regietted, as Wanganui gave ".ut'li an exhibition in physical drill as to whet the publics appetite for irore. Tfc dog trials and horse events tilled well, the jumping, particularly, lroducing large fields, and being of a very high order indeed, the judge, Mr A. W. Budge, having a severe tahk iliefore him, in adjudicating the winner, whilst one touch was enough to xuin a hofce's dlances. The band contest proved a >,uceessful innovation, and will probably be enladrged on next year. The novelty events also took on well. The organisation was good, and though the programme necessarily had to he departed! from somewliat, owing to the late arrival of the morning train from New Plymouth, yet evarydhdng 'Wlas finished l well, up ,t.O! time. Atr E. P. Cox, the new secretary to the A. and P. Association, was making his first public appearance in that capacity, and got through the ordeal with flying colours, being courteous and considerate to all enquirers, whilst his work was right up to the mark The various stewards and judges were aJso up to the moment. The results are as follows;—

Grant, of New Plymoutfh, iconsidered that some vctv fine work had been shown, especially by th« winning dog, who scored SOpts out of a possible 34. Indeed, he said that it was the best competition he had ever witnessed outside a sheep dog trial proper,, as all the degs competing were good, and so, too, was the ground. He considered, however, that more interest would have been taken in the trial had it been commenced later, an 8 a..m. was rather early. The work of some of the degs at the pens was especially good.
