PROFESSOR PRINCE'S REPORT.

Per Press Association. i Auckland, Wednesday. Two reports upon the fisheries of New Zealand will lie furnished to the Minister for iliiriue by Professor E. E. Prince, Canadian Commissioner of Fisheries, •before he returns to Canada, and the preliminary report containing lifts recommendations for improvement and development of existing a-esoiwces will be followed 'by a complete 'report upon Uio fisheries of New Zealand waters.

The final report will be of a very full and (Mailed nature, and will deal with the great fishery questions of tlhe Dominion more completely than luis been attempted'in any previous publication. A great dc-afl of information em'bodied in it will, Professor Prince considers, be found of permanent interest, and value. The work will probably be illustrated with photosrophs of fisher v operations .and plates of various kinds of fishes, which were secured by the experimental trawling of the Hinenwa, and from the lakes and river,*. Siine he left Auckland Ave weeks ago, Professor Prince has made an extensive tour in the South Island and the lake districts ol the North Island, being accompanied throughout by Mr F. Ayson, Chief Inspector of Fisheries. Having completed his examination of the sea fisheries he has been engaged upon the second and 'Jk* dlvißions of his investigations the fresh water fisheries and conferences with sportsmen, fish merchants fishermen, and others interested in the development of fishing resources. In .the South Island, Professor Prince visited Lakes Wakatipu, Manapouri, and Te Anau. He made elaborate observations at many rivers, including visits to Hokitika and Greymouth, and discussed numerous questions with interested persons and organisations at the provincial eentres.

Crossing to the North Island, Professor Prince continued his investingturns at Lake Taupo and the lakes of the Rotorua district, travelling to Auckland by way of Thames, where he met the fish dealers and fishermen on Monday evening. A lengthy programme still remains before the Canadian Commissioner. To-morrow he..will meet representatives of the fishing industry in Auckland, leaving in the evening for Tauranga. Conferences will also be held with representatives of the Acclimatisation Society of Auckland and the northern districts The tour of the , North Island will be completed by visit's to Napier and Wanganui, and (Professor Prince will then go to Nelson and' Picton to meet the acclimatisation societies of those districts, and the merchants and fishermen operating in Cook' Strait and Tasman Bay. Professor Prince -will then return to Wellington to prepare his reports. He" remarked that owing to the time restrictions imposed upon his visit by the Canadian Government, it is now necessary for him to complete the work still remaining with the greatest despatch.
