AT THE DOMINION SHOW. FALLING OFF IN ENTRIES. THE QUALITY GOOD.
Butter and cheese, Taranaki's staple product's, mil',ce a line display at the Dominion Show iat Ilawera The exhibit is 'beautifully staged, the produce (being relieved by pot plant wtliilst here and there, the beautiful challenge trophies that are the subject of competition arc conspicuous and assist in making a very attractive display. Though in most clas.-i s there is good coinpetition, yet ou the wUole there is a distinct fulting off in the number ot exhibits. It is nfevcrthelesis pleasing to note that there iv no falling off in the quality. Numerically the entries are fewer than have teen the ease since the inauguration of the Show, and as regards last ) ear, Wiere is a falling off of about "25 per cent., the numbers being respectively 122 and 94. This deficiency is about equally divided between butter and dheese. '.this is to be regretted, considering the hi.r.dsome trophies that are being competed fir. The falling off is mainly among outsiih competitors, but one notaV.o ateentee from the competition benches this year is Tariki, whicb last winter practically swept the board at Hawera.
This year, in tflie-cheese classes', honors goto Kaupotunui, Awattma, Kaponga and Hawera, the first-named, among i otlher successes, annexing tlie points prize and the latter the Taranaki championship, and also the prize for the highest points with -the big score of Ofl. Kaupokonui secured three firsts and a second, Awatuiia two- firsts and a second, Kaponga one first and two seconds, and Hawera one first and one second In the butter classes honors were distributed. Stratford added to its* list of successes by annexing the Taranaki championship, witli the fine grade of 95, scouring second in another class. Riverdale scored a first and two seconds. Te Aroha, which is managed by J. Rutherford, late of Bell Block, secured a first with tlie highest grade ait the Show, viz., 95y 2 . Kaponga got a first, and Lcpperton a second. Referring t.c< the quality of the butter the judges remarked tihat the exhibits in each class, save with oho or two exceptions, were of a high order both in flavor and make, and reflected great credit upon the makers. Even the l>iltter whidli scored the- 'lowest points would be classed as a fair quality. In Tegard to the cheese, they express disappointment at tils falling 'off in the number of entries, and regret that so few exhibits had come from outside the .Taranaki district, especially in view of the fact that the prizes offered compared very favorably witfh tihiose offered at other shows. The quality of the cheese was very satisfactory; indeed, the winning exhibits were very fine. The dheese opened up very clean, indicating that it had received careful attention at the refrigerating stores. The judges yaid a special tribute to the staging r .rangemcntsi, which, tliev consider, reflect preat credit on the energetic show secretary, Mr. Conrov
