After a lap-j of 43 years the ancient Easter custom of washing Uie lect of certain poor people was once mow iperfoiimcd ibv the Kimr of Bavaria m the Royal Palace at Munich this year. The ceremony, which dates from the hrst foundation of the Bavarian capital, and was in abeyance during the . lon-g regency of the present King's father, was held in the fjinous Hercules room, m the-presence of the Papal Nuncio, members of the Royal family, the Bavarian Ministers, and membera of the diplomatic corps- High Mass was first celebrated in the malace chapel, and tlienco the King and othe- dignitaries proceeded in slow procession to the Hercules rioom. Here the aged Archduchess Adelgunde, who is now 81, and ilhe Queen <if •Bavaria assisted the King to pour water over the feet of twelve octogenarian pauper:-!. The King then dried their feet, which the Royal chaplain 'kissed. The? ceremony concluded with the presentation to each of those patriarchs of a small gift of -money. The present was contained in a. small ipnrse woven in the Bavarian national colors of blue and wh:te, which the King hung I round the necits of the recipients.
