ASHORE AT WESTPORT.

THE U.S.S. CO'S STEAMER KAURI.

NO FEARS FOR THE GREW.

Per Press Association.

Westport, Last. Night. The UJ3.S. Company's steamer Kami, from Auckland, is ashore on the 'beach ' north of the es stern breakwater. When entering at 0.40 this evening, in squally ' weather, she was apparently driven bv »' westerly set on to the eastern wall. tShe then slewed round the breakwater, »nd later drifted ashore, or was, beaetied some 200 yards north of the breakwater on a hard, sandy beach. From there she drifted along for 'half a mile further nortn, and is now apparently fcard and fast. No one has yet come ashore, but as there is comparatively little sea and the vessel should be almost high and dry at low water, no W~fear9 are entertained for the safety of "' those aboard> The vessel is under Ulic command of Captain Buxton. The tug Vent out, but the Kauri was too far inshore for iier to render assistance. If the vessel holds where she is, it is not thought it will be a difficult task to refloat her, but nothing authoritative can be said until it is ascertained to what Extent she is damaged.

HOLD AND ENGINE-ROOM FLOODED.

Westport, Last Night.

There is very little reliable information concerning the Kauri. It is understood that No. 1 hold is full of water, Bad the engine-room flooded. The Tessel has 30 tons of cargo for Westport, mainly sugar and general produce. The captain and crew are standing by the ship until low water at about 4 o'clock, when they expect to be able to walk ashore.
