POLICEMAN IN TROUBLE. Wellington, Last Night. John Johnston, of the New Zealand police force, was charged to-day with desertion, and was remanded to appear at Oa<maru on Wednesday, on which date he aJso ;lia,s to appear on a warrant charging him with being about to leave New Zealand without providing for the maintenance of ,hi 3 alleged illegitimate , unborn child.
SOUTIILAND'S CHEESE SHIPMENTS. Invercargill, Last Night. The cheese shipments for 1913-14, so far as they affect Southland factories, close with the Ulimaroa's consignment for transhipment to England to-night. The present season's trade to London and West of England ports for Southland has been most satisfactory, showing roughly an advance of 4000 and 2000 crates respectively, compared with last season.
