Mr C. 11. Saphir, of the Mew Plymouth branch of tih» Bank of Kow South Wales, loft yesterday on transfer to VV'angHmii. Mr W. 11. tfunroe, advertising manager for Gordon and G»tch, died suddenly at .Christchureh- on (Saturday morning. 'File deceased was formerly manager of Me "Dominion" newspaper, also of the "Timaru Po>t."
A very pleasant gathering took place last uigflit, when the numbers of the Tiuiihuti Golf Club assembled to make a presentation to Mr ,W. Douglas, on the eve of bin marriage. Mr Geo. Grey, president of the club, presented Mr Douglas with ;i handsome silver entree dish, and expressed the best of good wishes from J.is fellow-me,mbe«>. Mr Douglae suitably responded, and the gathering dispersed to the sliuins of "I'Bt Hos a Jollv Oaiod Fallow"
Tie death occurred -suddenly the other morning at Masterton of Mr John Bair, a familiar figure throughout the Vvairarapa. The deceased, who was very highly respected, was horn in Engtond on August 24th, 1553, and came to New Zealand in tile sailing ship Wairoa thirty-four year,; ago. lie arrived in the'Wairarapa shortly after, residing at I 1 eatherston for twentj-seven years, and tor the last seven years at Masterton. He left a widow, two sons (Messrs Geo. and John IRarr) and two daughters (Mrs Hastings, of IVtone, ami Miss Eva Barr).

After a short but brilliant career at Canterbury Collogo, Mr Hroadhead "went to England in January 101 J, and within a few day* i ftftej landing, he won an open exhibi- i tion for a free place at Trinity College, Cambndge. His studies at Cambridge earned for him a senior foundation scholarship in March, IMS, and three months later lie secured first-class honors ia the second division of the Classical Tripos, at the same time taking his li.A. decree. During the summer [ vacation last .year, lie spent some time in the North of France to improve his knowledge of the .French language.
