-' A special „!,.,,ti„ g ,„• ij„. Council was held Oil Nalurday. Present: Crs. Hathn>vn-.- (.-Ji.-iir.-iiM), Thomson, Chmtoft'el, Anderson, .1. Smith, Were. Walter \oung and Rogers. ' TOLL-fUTES. I After n )iri,.f discussion, it was decided that tlie schedule of tolls lie amended by making the charge for a cycle-car tee same a, /or n two-seater'motor-car, viz., 2s. It was then resolved that the. schedule of tolls he forwarded Jhroimdi the member for the district to the' Minister of Internal Affairs for his sanction. Some discussion took place, as to the desirableness of notifying the Minister at the same time as to the locality of the toll-gate to be erected. Cr. Clmuiod'el was of opinion that once ) the main, read was put in order the tolls eould be abolished. Me did not conV Sid.r the 'Minister would sanction the schedule without knowing where the toll-gate, was to be placed. He asked : whether the Council would agree to a j toll-gate in tile South riding, if so de- j sired, on the same tcnr.s as in the North ! riding. , There was a general assent to the j query, and Cr. Thomson expressed him- j self as satisfied. I The chairman considered that the toll- ! gate should be erected about 15 chains ' from the northern boundary. | Cr. Thomson thought "it should be clearly stated to the Minister that 75 per cent, of the toll revenue was to go h to the North riding for two years. i Cr. Anderson moved that application 1 ■be also made to the Minister for ap- ; proval of one toll-gate to be erected J' within 15 chains of the northern boun- , j diry of the county main road. 1 Cr. Christofl'el suggested that there < should be incorporated into the motion j a statement that as funds permitted the i Council proposed to put down a perma- ; nent track of concrete or asphalt. He t considered that if this were done it < eould be maintained by the rates. 1 Cr, Were: We would all support that. < Cr. Smit'h advised tJiat the proposed j addition should not Ibfc made, and this course was adopted. ( Sfhe motion was then carried. i During a discussion as to calling for i tenders, Cr. Anderson, at the chairman's I request, agreed to supply a sketch of the toll-house. £

Cr. Cliristoffel moved that immediately on receipt of the Minister's approval tenders be called for the erection of the toll-gate, the matter to be left in the hands of the North riding- members, 'with j power to «ri. : In reply to Cr. Thomson, the chairman ! said the engineer would lay off the site and draw up conditions of contract. ENGINEER OR OVERSEER? I In relation to the applications ■for i the position of engineer, and for that of overseer, the chairman pointed out that in the case of an engineer it was necessary that lie should'be a qnalified surveyor, or the Government wonld not accept his plans. Tile Council then went into committee to consider tile applications, there 'being 25 for the position of overseer,'and 20 for that of engineer. Mr. W. J. Lopdell, of Manaia, -was appointed engineer.

There was a large influx of country settlers in town on Saturday.

A special meeting' of the Borough Council takes place tlris evening. The approach to t.ke aaiilivay yards at the south end badly needs attention, as the footpath across which the vehicles pass is a slough :of mud, which iladios lind very difficult to-negotiate.
