NOTES BY "MOTUROA." RACING FIXTURES. June 24,25—Napier Park R.C. Autumn. July 2, 4—Gisborne R.C. Winter. • July IS, la-Weilinaton R.C. Winter. Aug. 11, 13 and 15—Canterbury JjC Grand National. A PROMISING STEEPLECHASER. It is pleasing to record the victory of a Taranaki-traincd horse over the big obstacles, particularly as our alleged "orack" steeplechasers seem to have ■ , developed the nabift-ihis season—of letijfcigus down with a succession of bad _JHHps. N By his two victories at Has-' this week Exotic has risen from th« ranks of the mediocre,, and now has pretensions to holding his own with the best of the season's cross-country performers. When Exotic contested the two hack hurdle races at the Eginont winter meeting last month few thought that the game little brown son of Explosion would turn out a Hawke's Bay Steeplechase winner. "Jimmy" Barlow 'Had him fit then, tout the Exotic of to-day is a very different quadruped. Brought down to Wanganui lie was saddled up for the Hack Steeplechase (tyo miles) and just failed to concede a pound to Silver Monarch. Encouraged by Exotic's first day's form Mr H. S. Truman started the horse in the Grandstand Steeplechase (two miles and a half) Slid this distance wited him better. He turned the tables on Silver Monarch and ran in an easy winner. At Otaki Exotic was a not "order each day, but •the heavy going had him tied up, and many of his -admirers lost faith in him. That he is made of the right stuff ha I'roved when he beat a good one in The Spaniard in the Hawke's Bay Steeplechase this week, and being very leniently weighted on Thursday, .won the June Steeple after a good" race with Kauroa. Taranaki sports benefited considerably by his -second victory and they are now hailing Exotic as a National flrorse. Tliough not going as far as that this scribe agrees that he is a very useful customer and likely to win more race?. To Mr Truman and Trainer J Barlow, conxrratulations!
CURRENT TOPICS. Napier Park races on Wednesday. Aruake paid a great price in ttc Hawke's Bay Hurdles.
iExotic W not badly treated in the X'apier Steeplechase. On Century Hurdles form Player must > run well in'the Ahuriri Hurdles.
El Dorado raced at Hastings, but is reported to be very backward at picsent.
'Mescal fenced badly at Hastings, and on Thursday received a nasty fall. Bransfield is spoken of as a promising sort and may be heard of at Xa pier Park. Mescal has changed hands, the Canterbury sportsman, Mr D. Rutherford, liaving bought him for 200 guineas. (Hatana upset a warm field in the Turamoe Hurdles, leading from end to end and returning his 00 supporters a handsome dividend.
The June Steeplechase provided a good finish. Exotic, Kauroa and Sir Lethe rose at the last fence together, but on the fiat Exotic had too much "foot" and beat Kauroa nicely. Banian won a double at Hastings in good style and handsome necklet and bracelet go to the horse's nominator, Mrs J. D. Onnond. The victories were the most popular of the meeting. ■ Ruatangata, wTro won the Maiden Hurdles at EJlerslie and is now trained at Awapuni, is spoken of as a dashing fencer who will pay his way this winter.
It is a far cry to the Grand Nationals, j but some enthusiasts are already trying -to boom the Peary—Chortle double. Hawke's Bay generally produces a stroi
combination fo r t'lic big Ricearton cveata.
Bercola is not nearly up to the big burdens the handieanpers have been dealing out to it'iii this year, and it is time the weight-adjusters gave him a chance. The Pahiatua Racing Club must be given credit for pluck in running a nontotaliiator meeting, and it is pleading to note that it resulted in a profit of £44. jSest season tliey will have their tote permit and everything .in the gaTden will be grand! An offer of 4,>0 guineas was recently turned down by tlie owner of Self..
Royal Arms is said to have done a bit of jumping while at Eilerslie. lie is no good on the flat and his owner must be puzzled how to place him to get on the winning list. They say that Kurnalpi's trip t( Bunedin was not altogether a gloriou .success The crowd behind tho Hiawe-n horse mostly had their beans in on till wring start!; The annual meeting of the New Zca land Racing Conference will >be held ii the New Zealand Society of Account ants' rooms, Johnston afreet, Welling ton, ut 10.30 a.m. on Thursday, Juli 13. The Date and Permits Committei will meet at the same place at 10.31 a.m. on Tuesday, July 14. Referring to the Hawke's Bay Steeple chase an exchange states: —The bij cro«-country drew a field of nine, till Marion stables relying on Waterwork in preference to Kauroo, The Grea Northern winner, Peary, was installei favorite, Waterworks, Gondolier, Tli Spaniard, and Exotic being backed ii tlia't order. Backers of the cerise ca anc" jacket got a short run for tihei money, Peary toppling over at the fiirs fence. Gondolier followed Sir I.eth along the back, the last named leiadini ir to the straight. At the first of th' brush double in front of the double Sir Lethe ran off, leaving Gondolier ii the lead, with Exotic, Kaipetipeti Waterwoiks, I'he Ohief, and The Span iard following. Exotic and Gondolie were neck and neck for the next mile, ii which the field was further decreased ii number. Exotic ran past Gondolier a tlhe bottom of the straight, with Th> Spaniard second over the last obstacle In the run fcome Exotic carried toi much condition for the Spaniard, th* latter just failing to repeat his las ytar's performance by ihalf a length These were the only ones to trouble tfr judge. Castle Canter fell over Peary and bad to be destroyed. 'MulcaTiy rider of The Chief, hurt a knee.
