WHARF LABORER'S DEATH.
£BOO DAMAGES AWARDED. Per Press Association. Nelson, Last Night. On December 15, 1913, while the steamer Tongariro was unloading cargo at the Nelson wharf, a laborer named John Thomas Guy fell through an open section of the hatchway, and died as the result of injuries received. At the Supreme Court this week the Public Trustee, as administrator of the deceased's estate, claimed £IOOO damages from the New Zealand Shipping Company for alleged negligence in not having the opening, through which the deceased fell, properly guarded, and in not having the hold properly lighted. The case, which was heard before Mr. Justice Hosking and a jury of twelve, lasted two days. After a retirement of four and a-quarter hours, the jury this evening returned a verdict for the plaintiff for £BOO damages, scale costs being allowed.
