"STOP, THIEF'"
BICYCLE STEALER CAUGHT. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright Christhureh, June 18. It is not often that a bicycle thief is caught in the act, but, according to a story told by Senior-Sergeant Mathieson in the Magistrate's Court this afternoon, the city furnished such a case on Tuesday evening last. To-day Wilhelm Knab appeared before Mr. H. W. Bishop, S.M., on a charge that he had stolen a bicycle, valued at £7, the property of Harry Leigh.
The Senior Sergeant said that l>igh had left his bicycle outside a suburban store, but, a few minutes later, u noise outside warned him that the machine was being removed. A chase ensvuvi, and the thief was caught, but, while the police were being sent for, the man grew desperate, assaulted his captor, and escaped. Later, however, Constable •i. P. Ryan arrested him. Accused said that he had been drinking, and was not responsible for his actions.
The Magistrate, in inflicting a fine of £5, remarked that, even were that statement true, it was no excuse for stealing the bicycle.
