THE BAND.

Tlie members of the Citizens' Band, until recently the XI. Regimental Band, came to the startling conclusion last night , that the Citizens' Committee should have no voice in matters musical, and had no right to say that th& Band should have a new conductor. We hope this attitude will not induce the Citizens' Committee to alter its decision, for, apart from the fact that it has succeeded in arousing public interest in a languishing institution, it has .provided very considerable sinews of war. There can l)c no doubt tnat the band lias been giving for some time a very indifferent service, and the Citizens' Committee would be failing in its duty to the people it represents if it wore to rest satisfied with the present state of affairs. Men well versed in musical matters are convinced that a change in personnel is necessary, and the opinion of the members of the Band is not likely to make much difference. We believe that the engagement of a new conductor, if the right man can Ibe secured, will lead to the band attaining a very high grade ot efficiency, and it is hard to understand wQy its members stand in the way of the accomplishment of this very necessary and greatly desired end. There is no reason why Aew Plymouth should not have a first-class band, and not one which is content to trudge along in the wake of the seeond-grade combinations. The present conductor has admittedly done his best, and is himself an excellent instrumentalist, but we quse agree with the Citizens' Committee that the adoption ef their policy will be the means of making good use of the funds so liberally contributed by the public, and giving New Plymouth a band to be proud, of.
