DISTRICT NEWS.

HUIIFORD ROAD. (From Our Own Correspondent.) In common with moat districts, Hurford road settlers suffered their fair share, or perihapa more, of loss and "destruction through the southerly gale of last month.. Several hay stacks had their tops blown off, while two or three slieds were urroofed.

Mr. H. Loveridge was so unfortunate as to lose a valuable cow through a large rimu falling on her, this being his second losp, the other choking with a turnip. The gale also levelled Mr. Shrimpton's ■ew factory. He has now to cart his milk to Omata.

Milk is getting scarcer as Winter advances, the present supply at the local factory being lower than it has been for some years past. One farmer who has resided here for fifteen years says this is the first time in winter he has had to cease supplying the factory. Mr. 0. Jensen, our factory manager, lias returned from spending a fortnight's holiday in the Auckland district, Mr. W. Meyers having charge of the factory in his absence. ( Mr. Jensen is to be congratulated on his double win in the butter classes at ths Winter Show. His wins of the last twelve months have been five firsts, three seconds and two thirds out of twelve •■tries. „

Our euchre party and dance still attracts a goodly number.' of settlers, fully fifty turning up. Several of our young men have taken on n contract of felling some three hundred acres of bush out at Omona. Good luck to them! Messrs. A. Smith and A. Wood havc % journeyed to Palmerston to attend a meeting of dairy factory representatives, who are trying to form a better marketing system for dairy produce. '
