Dairy Produce
AT THE NATIONAL Sii'OYv". A GOODLY DISPLAY. TARAXAKd KELPS ITS END UP. HIGH PRAISE FOR STRAIVCRD. (From Our Own Reporter.)
Dairy produce makes a goodly display at the National Dairy Show at Palmerston, and although the entries, are not quite as large as t/hey were last year in the butter classes, yet every part of the North and <SK>ufcli Island is represented. Taranaki shows that it can still maintain it.s supremacy in the dairying industry by annexing quite a number of the prizes, in the butter classes -North' Taranaki, Stratford and lnglewood secured prizes,' whilst Stratford also tied with Kairanga in the championship class, and also in the aggregate classes. Stratford, with I)s'/; points, also secured the highest number of points for any butter exhibited. Kairanga, w'niuh shared t'he honors with Stratford, also won another class. This factory is managed by Mr. Wm. Kilpatrick, late of Tikorangi, and it has a record of which the suppliers can toe proud. He topped the average for the Wellington province at the grading stores this year, and also obtained two fir.sts and a third at the Hamilton Winter Show, In cheese, Hawora, Kaponga anu Ivaupokonui Uphold the reputation of the province, the former scoring a nrst with a wonderful grade of 96, and also winning the championship aggregate in three classes with the fine total of 285 points, ju*t half a point ahead of Dalefield, which is successful in three classes. Referring to the dairy exhibits, Mr. Cuddie, chief of ttie Dairying Department, said that though the number of entries were not so large in the butter c'asses, yet a very large number of dairy factories in the North Island were represented, and entries had also come forward from Canterbury and Otago. In all cases the butter had been held in store for the usual length of time, in order to test its quality. The produce, on the whole, has stood the test very well, with one Or two exceptions. In every class the competition was exceedingly keen, thus showing that the makers have put forward their lest efforts to secure the coveted awards. "There is, indeed, some very toe butter shown, equal to that seen at Winter Shows in any part of New Zealand," said Mr. Cuddie. "In some cases it was found necessary to group the exlnmts, there being in one practically no difference in flavor, body, color, etc., which speaksi well for the uniformity ;f the process of manufacture adopted by the makers in the-pre-paration of their exhibits. The general get up of the boxes left nothing to ho desired, all the exhioitors displaying great care 'n the neatness and attractiveness of their exhibit. There Stre two butters which are worthy of special mention, namely that of the Stratford and Kairanw Companion The article in. both these cases isi of a high <mler, and equal to anything seen by judges for some considerable time," The proportion of (he lower c'ass butter was .■small. This nust 'have been particularly pleasing to the Dairy Companies as well as to the members of the Dairy Division who took part in the .pidgins:. The cheese expert's said that the quality of the cheese entries, on tinwhole! compared very favorably with those of previous years.' The winniii'i .ntries were of a very fine class, and quite ui> to standard. The only criticism which fie experts had to oll'er was that they noticed a tendency in many entries to be a little loc/ ; c in body.
