Peace Preservation

A SOUTH AFRICAN MEASURE,

DEPORTATIONS DEFENDED.

By Cable—Press Association—Copyright

Received 18, 11,20 p.m,

Capetown, June 18.

The debate in committee on the Preservation of Peace Bill has concluded The closure was applied eleven times, and there were sixty-four divisions yesterday. The Opposition strongly protested against deportation depending on a .Minister's warrant instead of on a Judge's order; also the fact that the Bill was retrospective, some members pointing out that L/,onel Phillips and Sir George Farrar, members of the 1895 Reform Committee, were liable to deportation.

General Dc Wet denied that the January deportations had done South Africa harm, and said the Motherland would soon have to take a leaf out of South Africa's book and deal with semipolitical offenders in the same way.
