SCHOOL COMMITTEE,
At the usual monthly meeting of the Stratford District High (School Committee Mr P. iSkoglund presided. The headmaster's report expressed
satisfaction at the gravelling done during the holidays, also at the scheme of alterations to the infant room. A wish was expressed that an arrangement might be made by the Board whereby the school could secure the services of the agricultural instructor at stated periods, as unless expert instruction was available the proposed scheme of advanced work in agriculture would have to be abandoned. Thanks were tendered to Mr McMillan for his lesson to the senior boys on pruning grape vinos.
The committee decided to ask the Board to forward the plans for the infant room improvements for inspection.
The visiting committee reported, recommending a new down pipe at the south-west corner of the infant room; the filling in and draining of tne southwest corner of the playground; the erection of a bicycle shed and stand—18ft x Bft.
It was resolved to apply to the Board for the erection of a small bicycle Shed when the alterations to the school are carried out; also to obtain ar estimate foi the playground filling work.
It was revived to cut down the pine trees on the wtst side of the playground. Owing to the :backs of a number of the chimneys (being nearly burnt through; the Board's attention is to be drawn to the matter. A recommendation was made to the visiting committee that their visits to the school should ibe made during school hours. °
In connection with the school drum and fife band, Mr Cramer brought up I lie question of the loan of one of the *ide drums, hut the committee decided. or hia instance, that the drums should not be lent to any one, and the matter of framing rules as to the drums being taken 'home fcy the boys for practice was referred to Cramer and McMillan.
Accounts were passed, and the comnmtee adjourned.
GENERAL PARAGRAPHS. Several alterations have taken place in the Stratford District Ilig-h. School. Miss Clemow has been appointed as temporary assistant; Miss. ' Papps has taken the position vacated hy Miss King, and Mi?s E. M. Pearce has ,necn appointed sixth assistant.

A first offender mis .yesterday fined 10s at the Police Court for being' drunk. A ladies' cookery class has been commenced at the Technical School. Mr Campbe.l, a local breeder of banlams, .secured two firsts and a second at the Palmerston Show. •
