OUT OF WORK.
FARM LABORERS IN CANTERBURY Christohurch, June 16.
A Sun reporter was informed this morning, by one who is in a position to know the full facte of the ease, that the lot of farm laborers at present out of work is far from being an enviable one. There are more applicants for positions than the farmers can find places for, and there are many men willing and eager to work for whom employment cannot be found. At one agency alone thero were forty callers one day last week, and twenty more came in the following morning. There was no work for any of them. For the ] fir.-jt time for many a long day this particular agent has not a single order from fanners wanting assistance. ! Discussing the question the agent said that there were many contributory causes, but the chief one was that the industry was deadly dull. The labor market was flooded," as men had come to Canterbury from all parts of the Dominion seeking employment. The applicants were men of all occupations and stations in life, and many of them would take work of almost any description. There arc so many men out of work that fifty men could Ibe obtained at an hour's notice if the farmers had any work for them to do . Another difficulty arises from the fact that many of the applicants will not take work at any distance from the eity, and several of them have refused jobs offered tbcm rather than go into the country. Others have been known to leave the office ostensibly to go to jobs,.but have never turned up.
