THE USE OF RADIUM.

A NORTH ISLAND INSTITUTE. FALMERSTON NORTH SCHEME.

A letter which was read at the meeting of the Taranaki Hospital Board yeslerday disclosed details of a scheme which is on foot ii> Pslinerston North for the establishment of a radium institute in the North Island.

Mr J. C?. Wilson, chairman of the ,Palmerston Hospital Board, wrote at the request of a committee which had been formed to organise an appeal for funds to establish a radium institute in the North Island, asking the Board to extend its smypatliy to the scheme. The question of site was being left entirely open, the idea being that the institute should be built in the district ,which at a later date should be considered most suitable. It was felt that parochialism should be eliminated in a question affecting the benclit of suffering ;lmmanity. Them was little need to .point out that the use of indium was now beyond the experimental stages. Steps had been taken to obtain the fullest information from England, America, and the Continent. It appeared imperative that an expert operator with trained nurses should be imported from England. The committee, already formed was most anxious to set up canvassing committees in the various districts of the North Island, and for such to elect a representative to act with tho executive committee. He asked that the names of anyone willing to take the matter in hand be sent to Mr Gordon Bagnall, hon. secretary of tho North Island Radium Institute. He also asked that the matter bu .brought before tho .medical profession of the town. The committee had already over £-2,000 subscribed.

The Board expressed its sympathy with the scheme, and wll place the matter before the medical superintendent, Dr. E. A. Walker.
