Hirst, editor of the Economist, in a speech at Liverpool, said, in connection with the arming of merchantmen, that the Admiralty ought to realise that the game was not worth the candle. ft would be the most terrible thing for » valuable liner packed with passengers to endeavour, with two antique guns, to defend itself against submarines, tor.■■jedoes and cruisers.
