WHALER ON A REEF.
A TOTAL LOSS.

The Campbell's machinery broke down off Cape Ot\va\\ and while she Was attempting to enter Port I'hillip for repairs at 11 o'clock last night without a pilot, she was carried on to a reef by the strong ebb tide. Five ol the crew of nine launched a boat, which was damaged while getting afloat, but they plugged the hole with their caps. The boat was taken out to gea by the strong tide and they lost their oars. They improvised oars, and, after battling for several hours in the darkness, and when the tide had turned, they succeeded in reaching QueenscliiTe in an exhausted condition, and reported the disaster.
Meantime the remaining-' four of the ■crew, including the captain, left the Campbell in another boat, which a tug picked up. The Campbell is regarded as a total loss. She is valued at £lB,000, which is covered by insurance in Norway.
