THE WALKURE.
EXTENSIVE BOILER® ANKG necessary;
Messrs Okey and Hollo have been en? gaged to clean the boilers and bore out ! the boiler-tubes of the Walkure iefore she leaves port about the middle of next week. Owing to the fact that several of tliQ coils of the condenser became defective during the voyage out,- salt* water was used in the boilers, and this* of course, encrusted the boiler* ">» tybes. The work will occupy sever*! Wen, and will need to be pushed on rapidly if it is to be finished in time. There are three boilers, with .two furnaces ?wh, and some 1200 tubes, so that the work will be no light one. The state of tite boiler tubes was no doubt a contributing factor to the steamer's very* lengthy journey, and it is reported that the marine surveyor would not sanction her endeavoring to negotiate Cook Strait in her present state. It is necessary tot . tne vessel to .go to Wellington for further repairs before leaving on her homeward journey. f , s The port was again the gathering' place for many visitors from all parte at the province yesterday, and the Breakwater road was thronged with traffic all the afternoon. • The work of unloading the cargo is ! proceeding apace, 3538 tons having been ■ swung into the truoks up to 5 p4n, : on Saturday, which jpeans that this result has been achieved in approximately' 37 working hours. Should the fine wea- ' I tlicr last, it is expected that discharging ■ will probably be finished on Thunjay afternoon,\ Two hatdies only werp-wR* 1 ed jiesterdiiy, as a number of thegwn' werfe taken to work the Corinna, ' • arrived on Sunday morning with about 700 tons of general cargo.
