LOCAL AND GENERAL.
Tho twoi art unions—for the ,go£;l nugget and the patchwork quilt^— wdl be drawn to-night at 10 o'clock at the Winter Show. At Whitoley Church on Sunday night 'he Rev. A. B. Ghappell will mreacli, especially to young men and women, on "The Open Window." The anthem will be "The Sun Shall he no More' (Woodward). It was unfortunate that the arrangements for reporters at the Walkure luncheon yestorday left so.im/ueh to bs desired.. The table which the pressmen hail themselves to improvise was in i-mcih a position that few of the speakers wore cOearly audible, and this hampered the reporters considerably. When the Farmers' Union social at Opunake was proceeding on Wednesday, or just when the dance IK had become seated, a yoiiing lady, hare-fo'otca. and in bedroom aitire, entered the room and walked down the centre of the hall (writes the News' correspondent). She' wan asleep. ilStie looked round and then hurriedly departed. Those who saw the iincident will not forget it. The la.-' dies especially xelt the strangeness of the spectowlo. A somewhat serious motor-car accident occurred yesterday morning on the ■road from Waitara to New Pl'vmo-utiii. Two motor <n.r.% one driven bv Mr Ja.me-, Harten and the other bv Mr Vickerv were just passing I he Waiwakaiho golf links, when a collision occurred n* one was attempting to overtake the other. The result was that Mr Sarten's car overturned, and it i< reported that Mrs Garten's , arm was broken. The othnr riecupamts of the cars appear to have reaped serious injur) There are *ome supremely careless drivers in New P'vmoum who may one of these days have to appear to answer a charge of manslaughter. The other afternoon a- driver of a six-horse team came swerving round the corner of the. Grosvenor Hotel at top ..-peed. Coming up St. Aubyn strc< t w is a hea-villy laden motor-car, file, driver 01 which just managed to pull up the machine just under tho noses of the leaders. Had the motorist been going at other than a low wed an accident must "rrtainlv have, happened. It is an nlTi'nc" to drive round the coTners at liiijl l speed, and it is a pity that'the-inspector could not have seen this partwn?:ir incident. Another thing, drivers of V>w team.* or motor cars should not l.c permitted to I"',? corners in turning; when 011 their wrong side. If the rule of the road wr" enforced in this Ve- : ;'."1 there wou.d be fewer accidents. Nurso Doig wishe,; > notify tli n yjuhlic gonerally 'dfet! >•'!,>. has removd from Silver and PowdHuun streets t-c mere commodious apartments' at 114 Devon street, central', over Teed and Co.. chemists.
A vominder is given our readers of the pedigree Jersey silo at the Waiwatoiiho yards on Wednesday nsx-t, on ascount of Moasirs W. J. I!, and W. Baton. These well known brooders hoave been very consistent prize-winners at Taranaki Shows, and have always, bred from the best stock obtainable. Wo have been asked by tiliie vendors to state that there are no barren or non-broeding cows in their catalogue, a* any of their old cows that have passed their years of usefulness have been sold to tihe Wnitara works. On the same, day a smnlf catalogue will also be offered on account Of Mr S. W. Shaw and this' ,small but choice little herd should l>o well worth inspecting. The coronation of Miss Death, Vh.o wis elected Queen of Inglewood by a big aniajority, took plnea in tlhe Inglewood Town ITall on 'limrsday. The "royal'," party ro.bed at the I uglewood Hotel, by special invitation of Mrs Laing, and was escorted by a procession of firemen to i.io hall. There the queen was crowned bv Mr il. Okny, M.P., Mr W. E. IVrciva] acting a»; Loird Hit;h Chamberlain. Mr George P (! tera wak created "Knight Commander of tnie Kaimata Cowsnankers." and Mr Hawy Luke was invested with the title of "Knight Commander of the Golden Harvest." Her Majesty and the maids of honor were presented with goJd bangles in recognition ox" their services on behailf of the Brigade, and a (flieque to help to cover any monetary lo<sb through their candidate. Mjss hawke. won t«> popular voting contest, and was acclaiimed Princess of Inglewoou. A late but interesting contribution to technical work exhibits at the Winter Show came yesterday from/Mr JSenteni Wliite, of Lower Mangorei, who lias arranged a series of color-prints to demonstrate the process of developing or building up a crfored illustration, picture, or plate, by lithographic methods of printing. Tho sample of work in an invitation card issued l>y the late Government to chosen to meet at the official Rotorua reception to the (uen) Duke and Duoliess of York, ion fclto occasion of their Koval Highnesses' tour through the Dominion. Fifteen d stinct prints or "impressions" iW'e shown, indicating the graduated series of progression that the finished print picture has to pas-s through 'before reaching completion. This educative display, placed amidst the Tedmical CoV.ego exhibits, will be a surprise to many not "behind the scenes" of color-pnWication work. To the general public the exhibit may convey some idea of the pains taken fbv the press w printing industry to provide fcne added interest and pleasure to plain "black and white," that of colored illustration. The original water-color design, of which the finished print is a facsimile, was* the wwrlc of ,Mr White; as afao all the fifteen original drawings made upon lithographic stones, from which tho series of prints were taken or "printed." A well known saying. ''That ail good thing? come to an end," applies vei;y aptly to the great closing-Tip sale of Mr Skeatea, jeweller, which absolutely finishes at 9 o'clock to-night. Dovors of jewellery anu silver ware, etc., and speculators, will be wise in making good of the few hours left to procure the biggefit bargains ever known to the residents of Taranaki. This statement can be proved by a look at the values in Mr Skeates' window display. A fjplendid selection in every lino is still obtainable. Th« great success which bos already attended the sale proves that the values are toeing appreciated. .Snow vil-iitor.s will please note that the address is righit opposite the TiieaAre Royal, Devon stroet.
