The Winter Show

People's Jay

The popuhuuy of the Taranaki winter show was plainly evidenced yesterday by the manner in. which visitors from all parts of the province tilled the building. The weatiier in the morning' was .not very inviting, and the attendance tt'n.s eorres-poiulmgy poor, but m Hie afternoon the implacable clerk, of the weather was kinder, and the duurkcepers had their haiulis pretty full. At the same time the attendance up. to the middle of the afternoon was not what it lia-1 'been in previous years, this being no doubt am; to the counter attractions K>f the football match and the school committees' conference. All the same, it kooii became a matter of some difficulty to maKe one's way round the building. All the special exhibits attracted their snare of attention. The farmers paid snccial attention to the Agricultural Depmment'si exhibit an:! the working exhibits of milking and other farm machinery. The poultry and pigeon section, which is exceptionally strong this year, attracted a constantly moving crowd through which it was difficult, to pass, -the side shows were well ' patronised and correspondingly no.i-jy. and nil went merry as a marriage bell. The staging and general effect of the show is open to very little criticism, but there are one or two respects in which improvements might be made in future years. 'Rather too much space in the centre of the main hall was taken up by a "Siamese Twins side show, to the detriment of exhibits worthy of a more prominent position. Sideshow.' might with advantage be relegated to the outer darkncsi in a. show so pres-Td for exhibition splice as this has been. ISom very good exhibits! hid their light under a somewhat undiscoverable 'bushel upstairs, notably the High School and Technical College exhibits and the Indies' fancy work tables. The butter mii:l cheese exhibits might have been n'oi-" aI: '• 'ctivrlv staged. 'fi"iie"'i'lv speak-in?, however, the arr." 11 L'e:ni n 'i: for tITe working of the <how excellent. Mr. A., L. The judge of the honey i-eetiou, Mr Merrick, in discussing tiic .gr.umlat'. i honey exhibits witli a Xuw, repicsentative yesterday, expressed disappointment at the evidences of fermentation in granulated hxney. He bad awarded first prize to .Mr (:'. Taylor (this award was not mentioned in the liNt in yesterday's issue). Mr llerrick di-jaiialinrd all the other exhibits in this section as not up to file standard., "The reason for the fermentation," he said, "is tbat through lack of experience the. honey w-aW not ripened cither in the iliivc. or out of it.". The cMSlrhoney, he continued, was al-o dlsnppoinling. containing pop holes" ami "bee bread." and there were some of tbe frames.with "brood'' in itheiiv. The' extracted honey made a better showing.

Mr Merrick commented on Uie absence of exhibits from many men whom

ho knew could have made a good <lialay, icnuu'king that the kee-kcepcrs of the district did not aocm- to appreciate the educational value of (shows.

Mi' Ilerrick's own display, which is on exhibition only, -is one 'of the most interesting features of the show. The glas-i hive affords a unique insight into Hid inner workings of the bee colony, and tihe iricroaKing activities of the busy little, insects attracted much attention. A hydrometer, which is on view, demonstrates the method of testing honey. <

SPECIAL EXHIBITS.

OALTIIORPK CARS. Mr. Newton King lias prominently displayed in the motor suction line models of the Calthorpo cars, as well as of the Stu.li'liaker, which has become so popular in Turumiki of late. The models

Easily the host exhibit of fruit in the M'ow is the display by Mr. 11. Cole, of Vea'o road. For variety and quality it would be hard to heat, and the whole m i'o tastefully disposed that from a spectacular point of view it is a distinct feature of the produce section. Apples, pears, wines, chestnuts in the. burr, and preserved fruits are all represented, and tin; stall is tastefully set about with pot plants iind greenery.

WILSON'S PORTLAND CEMENT. An exhibit which attracted much attention from all visitors, more especially farmers and practical men generally, is that featuring Wilson's Portland cement, for which Messrs Bellringer Bros., of N T ''W Plymouth and Stratford, are :i'.;:i:tr,. The display includes samples "' 1.1.e cement in all classes of work
