CHAMBER OF COMMERCE A meeting of the Chamber of Commerce was held on Tue.sday evening, there being present: Messrs J. B. Richards (president), P. Thomson, A. F. Grant, W. H. H. Young-, W. P. Kirkwood, D. J. Malone, R. Masters, E. Jackson and W. A. Hewitt (secretary). Messrs Matters, Hewitt and Grant were appointed a committee to go into the question of making suggestions to the Agricultural Department regarding improvements in the High Commissioner's market report.
It was decided to write to the Minister of Lands expressing appreciation of the prompt manner in which the Kaitieke block was settled and airging that land at present reserved in Ponatu and Waro blocks on Mangapapa road be opened for settlement.
The General Manager »f Railways wrote that the extension of the railway platform verandah would ho a costly work, and as there were many other works urgently required the Minister could not see his way to recommend the work. The chairman said that no official notice had heen received regarding the taking over of the Whanganiomona section of the railway. The question of railway connection between Kaponga and Stratford was discussed at gome length, the chairman remarking that the Te Roti .route would never serve the purpose, but that the correct route would be from Stratford to Kaponga.—Mr. Kirkwood advocated asking for a survey and estimate of cost.—Mr. Hewitt considered that the cost might reach £IOO,OOO, hut the district could face that.—Mr. Masters was net sanguine as to the success of the line'. The chairman moved—That the Chamber place on record its regret that a detailed survey was not made of the Stratford-Kaponga, railway route before the route of the Opunakc railway was decided, and again places on record its firm conviction, founded on reasons already placed before the Government, that the Stratford-Kaponga route would best guit the province, and, moreover, is of opinion that the Stratford-Kaponga section should lie constructed in the near future.—Mr. Young seconded the motion, which was carried.
A committee consisting of Messrs Hewitt, Masters, Young, Kirkwood and Richards was set up to consider the question of legislation enabling local bodies to construct railways.
GENERAL PARAGRAPHS The monthly meeting of the Methodist Band of H*>pe was held in the Regan Street Hall on Tuesday evening, wnwi an enjoyable time was spent, Ml\ C. Downey presiding. The program me included /recitations by Misses Birdie Foster and Masters Albert .Hancock and Joe Henry; songs by Misses Kcitliii "Martin, Ida Boon, R. Everiss and Mrs. Richards; a dtfct by Misees 0. Everiss atid F. McAllrster; Miss Evelyn Moon gave a temperance reading, and a start dialogue was read by Messrs Olsson and Russ. A teagthy dialogue was rendered by a num■Wr of ithe Band of Hope members. A meeting is to be hcVl at the Xgacre "Hall on Monday next a't 2 p.m., when the question of establishing a toll-gate on the Mountain Road South will be considered.

With reference to the proposal that the Mayor should attend tile Municipal Conference (which was rejected on the casting vote of the Mayor at the Council meeting last Monday), his' Worship was placed in a very invidious'position, as the "voting was equal.
