IS THERE AN ALLIANCE?

To tlie Editor, —> Sir,— Your correspondent, "James Smith," asserts from his own observations that "there is an alliance between , the Liberals and the Red Feds." The ■value of deductions from observations depends upon the mental 6tate of the observer. James is evidently a victim , of hallucination. < il have already quoted one or two leaders of th c Social Democratic party. , '• Here is another taken from the Christ- , ! church Sun of May 20th: ''Mr D. G. Sul- ~ :livan, an acknowledged leader amongst the Social Democrats, speaking at a • Farmers' Union dinner, (fancy a Red ■ Fed. at a Farmers' Union dinner) said < that first of all he wanted to «mphasise thc fact that as a Social Democrat, there ' was absolutely no alliance between the i Liberals and his party in regard to the coming election, and that he spoke with : an inside knowledge of what was taking place in Social Democratic circles." An- ; other proof (save the mark) was the joy of the Liberals on the result of thc flrey bye-election. "Mr Wilford danced a can can." Mr Wilford couldn't do it, nor any other man in the ordinary garb of civilisation. Of course, the Liberals were delighted— a "Red Fed." is preferable to a "Reformer," particularly when the "Reformer" is a renegade Liberal. Even "Reformers" do not like "rats," as witness the selection of Mr Wilkinson in preference to Mr Vernon Reed for thc Bay of Islands' seat. Then James Smith has the bad taste, nay, the . indecency to introduce a lady's name. As the defeated "Reformer" had been her son's Liberal opponent for the Hokitika seat, Mrs Seddon's action is easily nn-. dci'stood. Then comes the abominable innuendo, and "made a night of it." Taking the usual colloquial meaning of the phrase, the suggestion is contemptible. To tlie unbiassed mind i:V the face of the real proofs adduced, there is no alliance between the Liberals and the Red Feds, such as existed between the "Reformers" and the Red Feds, at the last general election. In the second ballot at Ohinemuri, Mr Massey did his best to get Mr "to Hell with agreements" Hickey returned. He telegraphed in December, 11)11, as per Otaki Mail, "[ trust that in interests of Dominion Opposition will join with Labor in ousting Ministry," Now truthful James, when you can bring evidence as clear as that we man believe you. Why doesn't James get his name on the roll? Like "Mr. Harris. "I don't believe there is no such person." —I am, etc., "CONSISTENCY IS THE REFUGE OF FOOLS."
