STREET WORK.
SOLTAR OK METAL"? There was a .brief and somewhat onesided, discussion at the meeting,of the J| Borough Council last night, following on "| a motion by Cr. Jackson that the recom- ...#J mesndation by the Works Committee *J| that a large quantity of Soltar be ordercd for treating various streets in the borough be deleted from the committee's - report. In speaking, to the motion, Cr. Jack- £* son contended that the amount of work ■ : which would have to be done .on the ■ i.-* main street after the completion of the / tram route made it necessary for the. ' j. Council to conserve its funds to,that end. ■ f It would cost, he said, about .£BO-00 or *..j £ 10,000—about £2OOO per mile—fot ■'■ i metal, and .£IOOO for Soltar. In the meantime, he did not think the (Council '.-,j should spend money on Soltar for the ■ back streets. , " >s3 The deputy-Mayor pointed out that £SOO wag voted'for expenditure this • i4j year, and could not well be carried forward. ' V** Cr. Kibby, in supporting the motion, " said that the policy of the Council had - - always been to do as little as possible 3 to tho streets until the tramway was ,',' d completed, and for that.reason they had -.. * in the past put up with a system of. | patchwork. There was only £3BOO voted for maintenance work for the year. '> , The Soltar street would cost about .£3OO to maintain, or would have to be renewed in four years' time. He contended that metal *was cheaper than Soltar. Tho deputy-Mayor pointed out that the engineer had' assiirod the Council, . that the saving in upTceep on a Soltar ." street would pay for itself in two years. ( j The trams would not be completed for ." about eighteen months, and by repairing the side streets now less money would "■ be needed for street work nfter the tram- ' 1 way was completed. ' J Or. Ilealy supported Cr. Oollis, and die- * agreed with Cr. Kibby's estimates, which, lie said, were erroneously based on the expense of relaying the whole of the 'streets, in Soltar at once. The engineer said that by laying Soltar a saving of three indies of metal would be made. • The motion was lost, only the mover andsecondervotingfor.it. v v
